Returning to San Jose

One of the benefits of sponsoring the 48 Hour Film Project in San Francisco and San Jose is that we get invited to their big events. We had a great time at the Highlights and Awards show for the San Francisco competition earlier in the month, and we’re looking forward to the big launch of the San Jose competition at their Aug 2nd show next week.

We understand that the very popular band Hookslide will play live, that Phil Johnson will appear, and that Episode 5 of the variety show Be My Guest will be aired for the first time.

We think it will be a blast. Hope to see you there!

Santa Clara Speech and Debate Broadcast Special

To make the Speech/Debate Broadcast Special work, we’ll need more volunteers and staffing.  This letter was designed to be shared with parents, students, and community members who have an interest in these programs.

Hi, my name is Vincent Lowe and I’m a graduate of the speech and debate program held in my high school when I was a student.
  • When I was a student, every high school in my city had a speech and debate program. Today in Santa Clara county, most high schools do not have a team.
  • When I was in school, there were tournaments throughout the year and there were always plenty of qualified judges to oversee each event. Today, organizers struggle to train enough judges to cover each event and sometimes tournaments suffer lengthy delays while we wait for judges to become available.
  • During my time as a debater, schools had speech classes, and a teacher assigned to lead the debate team. Today some schools rely upon parents and community activists to make sure that students have the opportunity to participate in this activity.
We’re out to change that, and we need your help!

With Schoolhouse Earth, we’re creating a broadcast special slated to air in September that will raise awareness about the value of speech and debate programs, and call for community support.  The goals of this special are to:
  • Demonstrate the value that speech and debate programs have in training our leaders for the future
  • Inspire community support in the form of coaches, mentors, and tournament judges
  • Make an urgent case with civic leaders to improve funding and resources for this vital activity
We need volunteers to help us produce this program, and we need contributors to help us fund it.

Volunteers

We need three parents to serve as mentors during the taping of the special in June. The role requires one 90-minute training phone call, and one afternoon in the studio with us. Times are still somewhat flexible. If you are willing to serve in this capacity, we can schedule you in a way that fits into your calendar.

We need several students who are experienced in different areas of speech and debate. We want to exhibit a good example, so you should be well-practiced and able to demonstrate good skills in your particular area. You’ll be interviewed in a panel setting as well as given an opportunity to provide a performance that illustrates your skills.

We need one person to be a production coordinator. This requires one 90-minute training phone call and probably 4-6 hours of concentrated effort prior to the taping date at the end of June. It will be possible to schedule the work to fit your calendar and the effort can be spread out over time. No prior experience is required, but this should be someone who is well organized and able to manage a lot of details.

We need one person to be the communications coordinator. This requires one 90-minute training phone call, 2-4 hours of effort to write and send out emails to the team prior to the taping date, and about 2 hours just prior to the taping to confirm key participants by phone. No experience is required, only persistence, an email account, and a telephone.

If you’re able to volunteer in one of these roles, please send a note to info@schoolhouseearth.org and let us know what you think you can do to help.

Contributors

Sometimes people are inspired by the possibility of this program but are very busy and don’t have time to contribute.

We made it easy for people to contribute financially through our Indiegogo campaign. Individual contributors can earn thank-you reward that include early access to see the program, invitations to special events, and more.

If you’re inspired and want to help, please share the link to the campaign with your friends and family, volunteer or contribute if you’re able — but most of all, spread the word!

Speech Debate Broadcast Special

Schoolhouse Earth Media Labs is proud to partner with Mountain View High School Speech and Debate team, in association with Mid-Peninsula Media Center and CreaTV San Jose to create a broadcast special designed to stimulate participation by students and generate interest in the community among potential tournament judges.

The special will be filmed in June of 2012 and will feature top students from area speech and debate teams as well as interviews with adult graduates and community judges. The 1-hour special will be aired in early September in time to raise awareness of the competitive extracurricular activities. The timing is designed to precede the “Demo Day” weekend at schools that kicks off the year.

Mountain View High School boasts more than 100 students who participate in speech and debate tournaments in spite of the fact that no faculty member is assigned to coach the team, and the fact that there are no classes offered in debate or competitive speech.  In Santa Clara county, although there are nearly 100 high schools in total, fewer than 20 of them fielded a speech and debate team in the 2011-2012 school year.

In addition to focusing on the value that these programs provide to students who aspire to be the future business and community leaders in the next decade, this broadcast special will present a strong case for the critical contribution to all students’ ability to engage in critical thought and their ability to unravel rhetorical subterfuge.

We expect the special to be entertaining, informative, brisk and eye-opening.

Schoolhouse Earth Media Labs will call upon experienced local producers from the Mountain View/Palo Alto community as well as those from San Jose and Los Gatos/Campbell to create the special. It is currently slated to air during the first week of September on cable channels throughout Santa Clara County. SE Media Labs is currently seeking volunteers to participate in the production of this special.

The Actors Sandbox: San Francisco Edition

The Actors’ Sandbox is a long-running workshop series that gives actors a chance to show off their skills and it gives independent producers a chance to observe and meet actors in person outside the formality of a casting call or an audition.

The Actors’ Sandbox: San Francisco Edition
Sunday, May 20th 5-8pm
(Bay Area Location) Meets The Eye Studio, 939 Terminal Way, San Carlos CA
(Virtual Space Location) Soundstage 1, Running Lady Studios

The workshop coincides with the team building phase of the San Francisco 48 Hour Film Project for 2012. Team leaders and independent filmmakers will be in attendance to see who shows up and to meet potential team members. Actors from around the Bay Area as well as voice actors from around the world will sign up to participate and to exhibit their skills.

In addition to the traditional setups that give actors a chance to exhibit their acting ability, the event will feature participation in virtual space by actors logged in to Second Life, some of whom attend the workshop every Wednesday from Soundstage 1 at Running Lady Studios.

The model for the workshop is a simple one. Actors who are signed up to participate and who are selected will introduce themselves and read a monologue chosen from those provided in the workshop materials. Facilitators will keep time, moderate the workshop flow, and provide the participants with feedback and notes.

This edition of the workshop includes time at the beginning and at the end for the participants and observers to meet and exchange contact information.

ArtShots Audience Choice Awards

The ArtShots competition is designed to match up independent filmmakers with prominent local artists (and arts organizations) and have them work together to create a 90-second sizzle clip that captures the essence of the artists’ work. The competition was sponsored in the Winter 2012 season by Schoolhouse Earth, San Jose 48 Hour Film Project, and CreaTV San Jose.

Presented here are the submitted clips that qualified for audience voting by being delivered on time and with all appropriate  production documents complete. Your mission now, should you choose to accept it, is to take a look at these and share your perspective on them. We think you’ll find something to amaze or inspire you from among these stories. (Audience voting is open until midnight on Tues, Apr 3.)

SE Media Labs brings American Occupy to San Jose

Schoolhouse Earth Media Labs is proud to announce partnership with CreaTV San Jose to broadcast a new philosophy course from Purdue University focused on the American Occupy Movement. The first program in the series will air on Tuesday, Mar 20 at 3pm and will be re-broadcast on Wed, Mar 21 at 9pm.

Led by Professor Clark Butler, the course faced challenges on its way to being authorized and accredited as part of the curriculum at Purdue University – Fort Wayne. Now it is fully underway and although the course can be viewed online, this is the first time that broadcast audiences in the Silicon Valley will have a chance to view the course on television.

In San Jose and Campbell, Comcast cable audiences will see the program on College Channel 27 beginning on Tuesday March 20th at 3pm.

This program marks the first in a series of locally produced and broadcast content in the Silicon Valley market designed to expand education and learning opportunities within the community.

Schoolhouse Earth Media Labs’ mandate is global, but this effort provides an opportunity for the organization to establish the practices required to bring programming to wider audiences.

The Actors’ Sandbox: Special Edition

Schoolhouse EarthSuzy’s Super Cast & Crew, and TMUnderground are proud to announce a very special edition of The Actors’ Sandbox. This workshop for voice actors and machinima actors allows participants a chance to show off their skills and work with the creators of new media projects in production. We hold the event weekly in Second Life on Wednesday alternating between 3pm and 6pm Pacific Time.

Today (Wed, Mar 7th) the workshop will occur at a special time and “place.”

The mixed-reality special edition will happen both in San Jose (at South First Billiards) and at the regular weekly Second Life location (Running Lady Studios Soundstage 1). To facilitate real world logistics, the event will start at 7pm.
The entire event will be streamed live on Schoolhouse Earth TV (http://livestream.com/schoolhouseearth) and will incorporate a live musical performance, acting performances from both the live and the Second Life location, and feedback from our workshop facilitators to actors on both sides of the virtual world rift.
The event begins at 7pm with a short performance by Lani Grooves, a Silicon Valley musician, then at 7:30pm the workshop will begin using its traditional format. At 9pm the workshop will conclude and after a break, Lani will return the band to play a full set for audiences in the live venue and on the stream.
We hope you’ll join us for this very special milestone in the unfolding story of The Actors’ Sandbox.
